Godel x Uzumeri #10: Got A Magnet In My Head (Uncanny X-Men 144-150)

Posted in UGGU: Chris Claremont's Uncanny X-Men on June 7, 2011 by doctorcasino

Uzumeri: Welcome back to Godel x Uzumeri, and our look at Chris Claremont’s legendary run on Uncanny X-Men! It’s a long one this time: we’re taking a look at the issues directly after Byrne’s departure, culminating in a big Magneto story in issue #150. We’ll also see Man-Thing, the return of Arcade, Ororo’s bizarre admiration for totalitarian dictators, and much more!

Godel: IN THESE ISSUES: Two  groups of characters make their way to #150: in Story A, Cyclops plies the high seas with new love interest, Captain Aleytys “Lee” Forrester. They join MAN-THING in battling terrible despair-themed villain D’SPAYRE, then they get shipwrecked in the Bermuda Triangle and find a MYSTERIOUS ISLAND occupied by MAGNETO!

Meanwhile, the rest of the X-Men get drawn into a three-parter against DOCTOR DOOM and ARCADE, before having a run-in with misunderstood sewer mutant CALIBAN. Finally following up on issue #113, they then head for Antarctica to investigate Magneto’s old base; they’re surprised by a rematch with their most hated foe: GAROKK! While they’re searching for Cyclops, Magneto crashes their plane, they have a showdown, and it all ends when Mags nearly kills Kitty and is overcome by his CONSCIENCE.

SUBPLOT WATCH: Everyone struggles to make Kitty feel welcome, although her youth and inexperience keep coming up. Her flirtation with Colossus continues, even as her suspicion of Nightcrawler starts winding down. (There’s a weird suggestion that Nightcrawler is subconsciously trying to get on her bad side – this goes nowhere.) Storm is still weird around Stevie. The “Wolverine is a crazed maniac” thread culminates in an annoyed Angel quitting the team. Colossus’s kid sister Illyana (a potential mutant?) is now hanging around.   And…Magneto gets a backstory!

COMPLETIST WATCH: We’re skipping over Spider-Woman v1 #37-38 (Claremont), wherein Black Tom, Juggernaut, and their dupe minion Siryn (in her first appearance) frame Spider-Woman for a vibranium heist. The X-Men join in when Cerebro detects Siryn; they sort everything out, and Siryn comes back here to meet her unsuspecting father Banshee in Uncanny #148.

Godel x Uzumeri #9: My Name Is Wendigo Montoya (Uncanny X-Men 139-143, Annual 4)

Posted in UGGU: Chris Claremont's Uncanny X-Men on May 16, 2011 by doctorcasino

Uzumeri: Yo x-people! It’s my birthday this weekend, and what better way can to celebrate than by finishing off John Byrne’s X-Men run?

Godel: I dunno – Smallville is looking pretty good!

IN THESE ISSUES: It’s been months since Dark Phoenix.  The X-Men move on, with Storm leading and Angel and Kitty “Sprite” Pryde on board.  In the Annual (pencils by John Romita, Jr.), the team battle through a facsimile of DANTE’S INFERNO to save Nightcrawler. In the monthly book (now Uncanny X-Men in the indicia): Nightcrawler and Wolverine join with Alpha Flight to take down WENDIGO!   Sprite faces a lone DEMON at the mansion!  And everybody battles the new BROTHERHOOD OF EVIL MUTANTS, hoping to forestall a DYSTOPIAN FUTURE ruled by SENTINELS!

SUBPLOT WATCH: Kitty is weirded out by Kurt and interested in Peter. Nightcrawler and Snowbird size each other up (this goes nowhere). Storm is jealous of Kitty’s rapport with dance teacher Stevie Hunter.  People are worried about Wolverine’s murderous ways.  Mystique hints she has a connection with Nightcrawler, Shaw and Senator Kelly launch Project: Wideawake, and Cyclops meets a charming Lady Boat Captain!

Godel x Uzumeri #8: Body and Soul, I’m A Freak (X-Men 132-138)

Posted in UGGU: Chris Claremont's Uncanny X-Men on April 23, 2011 by doctorcasino

Uzumeri: Yo yo yo! This is Addison Godel and I’m David Uzumeri; we’re reading through Chris Claremont’s legendary run as the writer behind the X-Men. This week: the Dark Phoenix Saga!

Godel: IN THESE ISSUES: The X-Men attempt to infiltrate the HELLFIRE CLUB. Unfortunately, they are taken down by the club’s Inner Circle, including WYNGARDE, who succeeds in his plan to mentally turn Phoenix into the BLACK QUEEN. The X-Men turn the tables, but Phoenix has been permanently unhinged; as DARK PHOENIX she goes on a cosmic rampage.   The Shi’ar place her under arrest as a threat to the universe, and the X-Men fight for her life – but in the end Jean chooses SUICIDE rather than risk becoming Dark Phoenix again.

SUBPLOT WATCH: Sebastian Shaw discusses SENTINELS with US Senator Robert Kelly.  That’s it!

Godel x Uzumeri #7: Debut of a Disco Dazzler (X-Men 125-131)

Posted in UGGU: Chris Claremont's Uncanny X-Men on March 22, 2011 by doctorcasino

Uzumeri: Welcome back to Godel x Uzumeri’s irregular looks at Chris Claremont’s classic run on Uncanny X-Men! We’re here to take at #125-131, covering the classic four-issue Proteus arc – which I completely and totally misremembered, by the way – and the initial brouhaha with the Hellfire Club.

Godel: IN THESE ISSUES: The X-Men finally reunite on Muir Island to do battle with Moira’s evil, long-hinted son – the reality-warping, body-snatching MUTANT X, aka PROTEUS. They eke out a victory, but Banshee remains behind with Moira as the X-Men head home, where they find Professor X, returned from space early to check in on the Phoenix subplot. A tip from Cerebro sends them off to find two new mutants, suburban teenager KITTY PRYDE and New York disco hipster DAZZLER; this turns into a showdown with EMMA FROST of the HELLFIRE CLUB, who seem to have anticipated the X-Men’s every move!

SUBPLOT WATCH: Wyngarde continues his meddling with Phoenix, somehow making her believe she’s slipping back in time to the life of a Hellfire-themed 18th century ancestor. Jean’s powers (and her increasingly casual use of them), continue to plague everyone’s minds. Meanwhile, Colleen Wing quietly disappears from the comic.

So first up is the Proteus thing, which at four issues is probably the longest single coherent story we’ve seen to date. How’d it play for you?

Uzumeri: Loved it.

Godel x Uzumeri #6: Back in the UGGU (X-Men 120-124, Annual #3)

Posted in UGGU: Chris Claremont's Uncanny X-Men on January 22, 2011 by doctorcasino

Uzumeri: What up, X-Nerds! We’re back for another look at the classic Claremont run, this time attacking a six-issue arc involving evil Canadians, inner demons, Arcade, the gullibility of Colossus, and more evidence that George Perez really, really, really likes drawing beefy, hairy-chested, half-naked dudes.

Godel: SPECIFICALLY: The X-Men battle ALPHA FLIGHT, a Canadian super-team hoping to recapture Wolverine; the team finally gets home to the deserted mansion, and has some down time (as Storm battles some JUNKIES) before a run-in with high-concept assassin ARCADE. Meanwhile, in the Annual, they battle ARKON before helping him save his barbarian planet from certain doom.

SUBPLOT WATCH: Lots of Jean stuff – she worries Moira with her power levels, and also bumps into a DASHING GENTLEMAN who secretly is plotting to control her or something. Meanwhile, Cyclops is dating COLLEEN WING, Wolverine is seeing MARIKO, Colossus has DOUBTS about being an X-Man, and Banshee’s VOICE is still gone.

Godel x Uzumeri #5: Savagin’ A Savage Land (X-Men 114-119)

Posted in UGGU: Chris Claremont's Uncanny X-Men on January 6, 2011 by doctorcasino

Uzumeri: Hey, X-Fans! After our double shot of Grant Morrison’s Animal Man to finish off that bad boy, we’re here with the first of two consecutive installments in our look at Chris Claremont’s franchise-defining run on the X-Men. I’m David Uzumeri, and this is Addison Godel, and we’re taking a look at issues 114 to 119 this week.

Godel: IN THESE ISSUES: The X-Men have been separated into two groups in their escape from Magneto’s base; each group thinks the other died in the process. The larger group, unable to get a message home, battles SAURON and GAROKK THE PETRIFIED MAN in the Savage Land, then hitches it to Japan just in time to face down MOSES MAGNUM.

The smaller group – Beast and Phoenix – make it home to tell Professor X about the “dead” X-Men, BUMMING HIM OUT. In the following days, Xavier goes on to recount the tale of his first encounter with an evil mutant, before leaving with Lilandra for OUTER SPACE.

Godel x Uzumeri #4: Byrne-ing Down The House (X-Men 109-113, Iron Fist 15)

Posted in UGGU: Chris Claremont's Uncanny X-Men on December 13, 2010 by doctorcasino

Uzumeri: Hey! Welcome back to Godel x Uzumeri, where we’re taking a look at the classic Chris Claremont X-Men run. This time we’re starting with issue #109, John Byrne’s second issue on the title and the first after the epic Shi’ar/M’kraan Crystal arc. He’s read all of this stuff before; I haven’t.

Godel: IN THESE ISSUES: In short succession, the X-Men face off against WEAPON ALPHA, WARHAWK, MESMERO, and then in a two-parter, MAGNETO. But the real hook here is that this is our first chunk with John Byrne firmly installed as penciller and (at this point unofficially) co-plotter. So as a bonus, we also took a look at the X-Men’s guest appearance in IRON FIST #15, the final issue of that Claremont/Byrne title and their first time doing the X-Men together, since it came out a few months before #108.
